COMPETENT CREW – A 5 DAY INTRODUCTION TO SAILING FOR COMPLETE BEGINNERS

Our Competent Crew course will introduce the complete beginner to cruising under sail, equipping novice sailors with the skills required to be an active and useful crew member onboard a yacht.

The course is completed over the course of five days, with 100 miles at sea and a minimum of four hours of night sailing. if you have already taken one of our start yachting course this can be reduced, or carried out over weekends.

The course gives students a sound knowledge and understanding of the yacht and all the basic sailing techniques including rope work, mooring up and casting off.

Sample Itinerary

You will meet your crew and instructor for the 5-day practical course 0900 on Monday morning. Then you will spend the morning preparing to set sail. You will spend the next 5 days exploring the Solent and South Coast. The route you take and the ports you visit will be weather dependent – as part of the course you will be involved in planning the route for the week and places to drop anchor.
You will return about 4.30pm on the final Friday.

Prerequisites

There are no experience needed to join our Competent Crew course as we start from the beginning.

Syllabus and Learning outcomes

By the end of the course you will have experienced steering a yacht, sail handling, ropework and be aware of safety on board.

Holders of the Start Yachting certificate can go on to complete the Competence Crew course in a reduced time of three days or two weekends.
